SYMPTOMS IN ADULTS:

These are difficult to define, due to lesser research done on this topic. These individuals may have had symptoms in childhood that may have gone unnoticed, which follows into adulthood as well.

The core concerns remain the same, hyperactivity and inattentiveness, but the intensity changes as they mature. So adults may experience lesser hyperactivity but their inability to concentrate and work orderly may affect their performance at work and social settings, on a daily basis.

  • Carelessness or lack of attention to detail
  • Changing interests, not finishing tasks before beginning another
  • Poor organizational approach
  • Forgetful, misplacing things
  • Speaking out of cues in a social gathering, cannot wait for their turn
  • Quick temper, irritability
  • Impulsive, risk-taking behaviour

Genetic: there has been research linking genes to occurrence of adhd

  • DIAGNOSIS

There is no single test that can diagnose ADHD. A multi factoral approach is required, involving the child, parents and caregivers.

When the symptoms fulfil the criteria in the DSM-5-RT, a diagnosis is made.

The symptoms should have been noticed for at least 6 months, in more than 1 setting
